You know that sweet spot where a trip feels polished and effortless but still outdoorsy and spontaneous?
That was Bellevue.
I expected “nice.” I didn’t expect to spend mornings zipping through new-growth trees, afternoons cruising past waterfront mansions on a whisper-quiet boat, and evenings hopping between skyline views and cozy neighborhood patios without ever feeling stressed or rushed.
But that’s exactly how our long weekend went down and why I think Bellevue is the most “have-it-all” city break in the Pacific Northwest right now.
Why Bellevue Works (Even If You’re “Not A City Person”)
Bellevue has major-city energy! World-class dining, slick hotels, and shiny shopping await, but it also lets you vanish into parks, lakes, and leafy trails in minutes.
One second you’re grabbing a latte; the next you’re biking next to a blueberry farm or kayaking a quiet slough with turtles popping up next to your paddle.
It’s clean, it’s easy, and summer here is perfect.
We based ourselves at The Bellevue Collection, a trio of properties (Bellevue Square, Lincoln Square, and Bellevue Place) connected by skybridges.
Let me translate… movie theaters, VR arenas, restaurants, and both of our hotels were a weather-proof stroll apart. No logistics math, no Ubers for short hops. Just wander.

Where We Stayed: W Bellevue vs. The Westin
We split the stay to compare vibes, but never even had to cross a street thanks to the skybridge connections!
We loved both stays, but if you’re wondering which one you’d like more here is what we thought:
- W Bellevue — Young, buzzy energy with fun public spaces. We arrived early, dropped our bags, and literally went upstairs to catch a movie while the room finished—then walked back via skybridge to check in. If you like a stylish scene with a great bar program, this is your move.
- The Westin Bellevue — Still central, but calmer and business/family-friendly. Big windows, comfy beds, an easy home base steps from parks and Old Bellevue’s restaurant patios. Both hotels connect to the same skybridge network, so you can roam the Collection without stepping outside.

The Adrenaline Morning I Didn’t See Coming
We kicked day two off with Bellevue Adventures’ Zipline Tour—seven lines and two suspension bridges strung through a maple and Douglas-fir canopy.
Guides kept it playful (think silly challenges like launching backward or eyes-closed), but the course is legit: up to 80 feet up and zips as long as 458 feet.
It’s a blast, beginner-friendly, and only about 10 minutes from downtown.
Pro tip: Book an early slot on a clear day: cooler temps, softer light, and you’re back in time for lunch.

The Lunch That Won Our Whole Trip
I don’t say this lightly: Rascals Public House served our favorite meal in Bellevue.
We met the owners (instantly likable, clearly proud), heard the backstory behind the Rascal Burger, and crushed a plate of Mac & Cheese Croquettes that should come with a warning label for being so good.
If you like beer, order the house Rascals Lager – Scuttlebutt, and don’t skip the Mixed Berry Margarita.
Rascal’s was kind of comfort food with soul that makes you want to go back the next day. And the next. And the next…
We wish we could have eaten here again, but we’d already planned out the rest of our meals for the trip! When we make our way back to Bellevue, you’d better believe this will be the first place we go for a bite!
Stop into Rascals! You won’t regret it!
Peak “City-In-Nature” Moment: Kayaking The Slough
Grabbing a double kayak from Best Kayak Rentals at Enatai Beach Park, we paddled into the slough and promptly lost track of time (and our rental window… oops). Turtles, herons, and a level of calm I didn’t expect inside city limits.
It’s the easiest way to feel like you escaped without going anywhere. Rentals are walk-up; current hours are posted here.
Pro tip: Set a timer so you don’t pay the “I was having too much fun” fee. We got so into it, we ended up being about 2 hours late turning our kayak back in! 🫣

Drinks, Desserts & A Skyline Brunch You’ll Brag About
- Ascend Prime Steak & Sushi (31st floor) — Bellevue’s most photogenic brunch. We sat in the clouds with Lake Washington and Seattle in the distance; the Chicken & Waffles and Avocado Cristino were standouts. If you’re celebrating anything, this is where you do it. Reserve ahead.
- Seastar Restaurant & Raw Bar — Dinner was solid, but dessert is the move. Order the Passion Fruit Panna Cotta and the Crème Brûlée, and thank me later. Both are staples on the menu for a reason.
- 520 Bar & Grill (Old Bellevue) — Our favorite patio hangout. Easy walk via Bellevue Downtown Park (which honestly feels a little European on summer evenings). Friendly locals, great “we live here and never want to leave” energy.
- Paddy Coyne’s Irish Pub — Classic fish & chips + a Guinness. Low-key, central, and a short skybridge stroll from the hotels.

Our Unexpected Obsession: Free E-Bikes For Hotel Guests
Staying at participating downtown hotels?
You may be able to borrow complimentary e-bikes with the city’s BikeHop program. We used them to connect parks, the Bellevue Botanical Garden, Kelsey Creek Park, and Larsen Lake Blueberry Farm (yes, you can U-pick in season).
The bikes are comfy, have pedal-assist up to 20 mph, and come with locks and helmets, making it painless to weave nature stops into your city day.
What we loved most: picking sun-warm blueberries, then having a picnic in another park minutes later. That “city-to-nature” flip is Bellevue in a nutshell.

A Step Back In Time
One of the most unexpected highlights of our trip was stumbling into Omega Photo, a local film camera store that instantly gave us all the nostalgic vibes. Some friends of ours always travel with a film camera, and we loved the idea of bringing one along to capture our trip in a more intentional way.
Instead of heading into Seattle to hunt one down (where our friends got theirs), we discovered Omega Photo was only a few minutes from our hotel. Even better? We grabbed a free ride using the Bellevue Bellhop program (yes, you can actually get free rides around town, definitely take advantage of that!).
When we walked in, we honestly had no clue what we were looking for, but the owner was awesome. He patiently walked us through different options, showed us some really cool antique cameras, and helped us pick out the perfect point-and-shoot for our trip.
We ended up hanging out there for about an hour just chatting. Everyone working there was so friendly and passionate about photography. Walking out with that little film camera felt like the best kind of souvenir, and we can’t wait to see how the photos turn out once the roll is developed.
If you’ve ever thought about going back to the good ol’ days and capturing your trip on film, Omega Photo is 100% worth the stop.
Techy Fun Break: VR Game Night
Across from the theater inside Lincoln Square, MIRRA is a social VR arena with immersive, game-show–style play, 8K panoramic screens, shareable bites, and handcrafted cocktails.
It’s a fusion of a bar night and a digital playground.
We were just a team of two… and we crushed it, beating out bigger groups with nimble-squad strategy and maybe a little beginner’s luck 🤘. The staff was so cheery and on point, they made us feel like champs even before we won.

Day Trip That’s Worth It: Seattle’s New Waterfront
Our last morning, we traded brunch-view selfies for something unexpected: a guided history hike led by Global Family Travels through the Coal Creek Trails, where the forest hides the remnants of a coal‑mining town.
This 3.5‑mile “Trail Through Time” uncovered old mine shaft entrances, logging and mining artifacts, and interpretive signs that bring Bellevue’s 19th-century industrial roots vividly to life.
As we hiked, our guide spoke of rail lines and company towns all beneath a canopy of towering Douglas-firs and gentle bird songs.
After our morning hike, we continued to Seattle’s new Waterfront Park.
The transformation is huge: new connections from Pike Place Market down to the water via Overlook Walk and a growing promenade with piers, playgrounds, and views for days.
If you’ve been to Seattle before this new addition, you know what a pain it was to get down to the waterfront. Well, now it’s finally easy (and gorgeous) to access the waterfront.
Lunch tip: Ivar’s on the water for classic chowder and stories from the folks who helped make the new waterfront happen.

The Perfect Farewell: Silent Cruising On Lake Washington
We capped our trip with Bellevue Lake Cruises on a Duffy electric boat gliding past shoreline estates (including a certain tech icon’s place), sipping wine, and soaking up that last golden hour.
Electric means peaceful music and conversation without engine roar, and you get a totally different feel for the city from the water.
This was the perfect way to end our trip, with chill conversations about all our experiences and perfect weather out on the water.

Practical Bits (So Your Trip Feels As Easy As Ours)
- Base yourself at The Bellevue Collection. The skybridges mean weather-proof access to hotels, dining, theaters, bars, and MIRRA, plus quick walks to Downtown Park and Old Bellevue.
- Borrow a BikeHop e-bike if your hotel participates; it’s the most fun way to connect parks and neighborhoods.
- Zip in the morning, paddle in the afternoon. Book Bellevue Adventures early, then hit Best Kayak Rentals at Enatai or Meydenbauer later when the light gets pretty.
- Don’t skip dessert at Seastar or brunch views at Ascend. Reserve ahead for weekends.
- Alaska Lounge at SEA: If you’re flying home late, day passes are sold when capacity allows. Go to the North Satellite lounge for the big windows—on clear days, you can see Mt. Rainier.
Bottom Line
Bellevue surprised us. It’s polished without being pretentious, outdoorsy without the logistics, and genuinely friendly. We left with blueberry fingers, new VR bragging rights, and a plan to come back for more lake time.
If you want an easy win for a getaway or “city break that still feels like vacation,” put Bellevue at the top of your list!
