Together with her team of superb guides, you will experience some of Korea’s favorite simple dishes at some fine local establishments, all within easy walking distance of one another.
Below, is just a sample of what you will experience while on this 3 hour “Heart of Seoul Food Tour.”
We had an absolutely wonderful and knowledgeable guide – Dji-Yon, who explained in detail what we were sampling throughout the entire tour.
Heart Of Seoul Food Tour
Our tour began with us meeting the founder of Korean Gourmet Hunters Veronica Kang and Dji-Yon, at Seoul Station in the heart of the city. From here, we began a leisurely walk along a picturesque above ground promenade to our first stop on the tour.
1st stop: Three menu selections – Kalguksu, Naengmyeon, Bibimbap
At this popular hidden local eatery, we sampled 3 very popular dishes. These were …
Kalguksu, Naengmyeon and Bibimbap
Kalguksu – “knife-cut noodles” is a traditional Korean noodle soup, with a variety of broth, vegetables and kelp included.
Naengmyeon – is another popular noodle dish served cold. Koreans love this dish on hot summer days. This dish is usually served with a tangy sauce and ½ boil egg included.
Bibimbap – a mixed rice dish served with a variety of vegetables and usually a fried egg on top. This is a very popular dish and after taking this tour, became one of my favorites to order on our travels.
All 3 dishes were very tasty and a great way to start our tour with these traditional favorites.
It was then on to our 2nd local market eatery to sample a couple of more local favorites …
2nd stop: Tteokbokki & Eomuk
Tteokbokki – apparently this is one of Korea’s most popular street foods. It is a chewy rice cake (tteok) blended with a sweet-spicy gochujang (red chili paste) sauce.
Our sample was the soft and chewy cylindrical type of rice cake. Certainly a different texture to experience, but very tasty!
Eomuk – is also referred to as a fish cake. It is another very popular snack enjoyed by locals and served on a stick. It is made from ground white fish (usually pollock or cod) and mixed with flour, starch, vegetables, sugar and seasonings. It is then shaped into a form that can be skewered.
A very nice texture and appealing fish taste!
3rd stop: Tongdak & Makgeolli
After enjoying these 2 local favorite street food snacks, it was a short walk to our next local eatery to taste …
Tongdak – in Korean this is referred to as Whole Fried Chicken. This is literally deep fried chicken that’s crispy on the outside, yet tender and juicy inside. This simple yet favorite local eatery serves one thing and one thing only … Tongdak!
Makgeolli – a traditional fermented rice wine and is known to be one of the oldest alcoholic drinks in Korea. It has since gained popularity once again and is often served with Tongkak and/or beer.
It has a creamy texture, that’s slightly sweet with a fairly high alcohol content usually over 6%. It definitely requires a taste, but we enjoyed sampling this long standing traditional beverage.
4th stop: Mandoo
Mandoo – Korean Dumplings. This became another favorite dish of ours while on our visit to South Korea, and only after discovering this dish on this food tour.
Main ingredients inside can include: Ground pork, beef, and/or chicken. As well mixed with
tofu, garlic, ginger, green onions, glass noodles and cabbage.
One word to describe Mandoo … Delicious!
5th place: Gelato With Local Ingredients
Our final stop included on our outstanding Korean Gourmet Hunters Heart of Seoul Food Tour, was to a well known Gelato parlor.
Our chosen gelato was served with a large serving of traditional Bingsoo, which is shaved ice ice. This is normally shared with at least 2 or more with a variety of toppings included. These can range from adding fruit, sweet red beans, chocolate and more.
We chose the mango fruit option with a variety of nuts and sweet red beans, topped with vanilla gelato.
It was a great finish to this superb food tour experience!
We’ve enjoyed local cultural food tours at many different destinations around the world over the years. It’s a wonderful way to experience the local culture and traditional dishes in the country you are visiting.
For us, it adds to the overall experience when traveling to new destinations and at the same time, discovering some amazing eateries that only the locals are aware of. It also gives you a taste of what you may wish to continue trying while traveling around in that chosen country.
If your plans include a visit to Seoul, then I highly recommend booking this food tour and/or others that Korean Gourmet Hunters offers.
