How to get to and from the airport in Montenegro
One of the key queries about getting around Montenegro is how to get from the airport to the centre.
There are two international airports in Montenegro, Podgorica and Tivat.
Podgorica is the capital of Montenegro and Tivat is very close to the popular destinations of Kotor and Perast (and even the neighbouring country of Dubrovnik).
As there is no Uber in Montenegro, you won’t be able to take an Uber from the airport to your accommodation. However, there are a few transport options you can use to make the trip from the airports.
Private airport transfer
You can book a private airport transfer in advance. This is a convenient and stress-free option for journeys to and from both Podgorica and Tivat airports in Montenegro.
A driver will meet you on arrival, with your name displayed, and take you to your transfer vehicle. When you’re tired from travelling, this direct service is a great way to start your trip.
A pre-booked transfermeans you can budget for the cost in advance and avoid the hassle of bargaining over taxi prices in a language that’s not your own.
Airport transfer costs are very reasonable in Montenegro with Kiwitaxi, so for maximum convenience this is a great option in Montenegro.
Bus to and from Tivat Airport to Kotor
The bus station in Kotor
Whilst there is a bus that runs the Tivat to Kotor route, unfortunately it does not stop at the airport. So, you can either walk the 1.5km to cover the distance between the nearest bus stop and Tivat airport, or you can take a taxi or book an airport transfer instead.
Bus to and from Pogdorica Airport
Buses run frequently from outside Podgorica airport to the bus station in Podgorica centre. Several different companies serve the route.
The cost of the bus ticket from Pogdorica airport to the city is 2- 3 euros one way, depending on the operator. Check times on the busticket4.me website.
Podgorica bus station is next to the train station, so it’s easy to get onward travel to other places in Montenegro like the beautiful Durmitor National Park. The bus station itself is a little sparse, there are toilets, but I found them to be not the nicest.
Airport taxis in Montenegro
Along with pre-arranged transfers, taxis are a good option for getting to and from Podgorica and Tivat airports. Be aware that they might be under high demand at the time you’re travelling.
Taxi from Kotor to Tivat airport
Although the journey time from Kotor to Tivat airport by taxi is short, at only 15 minutes, make sure to allow at least double that time for the trip, as traffic in and around Kotor can come to an almost standstill at peak times and you don’t want the stress of running late for your flight.
On one of my taxi trips in Kotor we were stuck in the tunnel outside of town for what seemed like an age.
The cost of the airport taxi should be around 25 to 30 euros. I used Red Taxi when I was in Kotor and boked via WhatsApp.
Taxi from Podgorica airport to the centre
The journey time from the airport in Podgorica to the city centre is also around 15 minutes by taxi.
You can book a taxi for €15 from Go Montenegro.
