Carnival Cruise Line is bringing back in-person muster drills on select sailings, but it’s not a permanent change.

Some passengers booked on March sailings of the Carnival Liberty, Carnival Conquest, and Carnival Valor received notices that their cruises would require a full traditional muster drill before departure. Instead of the self-mustering process introduced in 2021, where guests check in at their assigned station at their convenience, these passengers will need to gather at their muster stations for a comprehensive safety briefing.

The move led to speculation that Carnival might be shifting back to the old format across the fleet, but that’s not the case. Carnival’s Brand Ambassador, John Heald, directly addressed the rumors in a Facebook post:

“Before any of the usual cruise news pages say we are considering a change, we are not.”

Heald also clarified that these in-person drills are part of routine safety protocols. Every six months, certain ships conduct full-scale muster drills to comply with Health, Environmental, Safety & Security (HESS) regulations. These exercises are designed to make sure both crew and passengers are familiar with emergency procedures.

For now, most Carnival cruises will continue using the self-mustering process. However, depending on their sailing, passengers could still encounter the traditional drill on occasion. While the return of in-person muster drills on some ships may not be a welcome change for everyone, it remains a key part of cruise safety regulations.
