Afternoon glow from my King Junior Suite
Breakfast in bed with bubbles
I recently spent two nights at the new InterContinental Auckland, and wow, what a stay! Location-wise, it honestly doesn’t get better than this. The hotel sits right on the CBD waterfront, at the very start of Queen Street, Auckland’s main shopping strip and directly opposite the Downtown Ferry Terminal, making it the perfect base whether you’re exploring the city or heading off to Waiheke Island.
The hotel itself is sleek and luxurious, with 139 rooms and suites, some offering stunning views over the Waitematā Harbour. I arrived a little outside the standard check-in time, but the process was seamless and the staff couldn’t have been more welcoming and helpful, a great first impression that set the tone for the rest of my stay.

Room views over Waitematā Harbour
InterContinental Auckland offers a small selection of rooms and suites offering either city views or harbour vistas. Guests can choose between Classic and Premium rooms, or opt for one of three luxurious suite categories for added space, comfort and indulgence.
Since I was travelling solo, I had the chance to enjoy their NOMO (Night On My Own) package, which was honestly such a treat. This limited-time (available until 30 June 2025) package is all about embracing the joy of a night entirely to yourself (no kids, no partner, no flatmates!). Just uninterrupted time to relax, recharge and unwind.
Byredo take-home kit
The package includes breakfast and bubbles in bed, valet parking, and a very generous 4pm late check-out (subject to availability).
As a bonus, I also got to take home a luxe Byredo pamper kit and a silk eye mask, the perfect little extras for a night of solo self-care.

Where I Stayed: King Junior Suite Harbour View Rooms
Living area of the King Junior Suite
Bedroom with luxurious king-size bed
I stayed in a King Junior Suite Harbour View on the 10th floor (room 1010), and it was honestly such a beautiful space to call home for two nights. The suite featured a King bed and a semi-separate living area, plus a fully stocked minibar, a De’Longhi coffee machine and a lovely selection of teas, which I definitely made good use of!
The light in the room was incredible at all hours of the day thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows throughout and being on the corner of the building meant I had some of the best views over Auckland’s harbour. The suite was thoughtfully designed with stylish furniture and little touches of luxury everywhere.

The bathroom also has a lovely big tub
The bathroom, though on the smaller side, was just as beautiful and well thought out, featuring a separate bathtub and rain shower, luxurious Byredo toiletries and a separate toilet tucked behind a glass door, a clever detail that adds extra comfort and privacy.
It was a truly comfortable five-star stay, complete with thoughtful touches, like the convenient filtered water tap just steps from the room.
Access to Club InterContinental

Breakfast at Club InterContinental
During my stay, I had access to Club InterContinental, located on the third floor, stylish and peaceful lounge exclusive to Club guests. It was the perfect spot to take a quiet break from the city, with some great perks included.
I had the à la carte breakfast here on my first morning, which was beautifully presented and delicious. There was also a small breakfast buffet with fresh fruit, breads and other extras. In the afternoon, they served light bites, sweets, and a selection of teas as part of their afternoon tea offering.
One of my favourite parts of the day was returning for evening canapés and cocktails, a relaxed way to unwind with a glass of wine, a few small bites and some great city views after a full day of exploring Auckland.
Lunch at Advieh Restaurant and Bar

Of course, I had to get dessert
I had lunch at the hotel’s on-site restaurant, Advieh, which serves up Middle Eastern-inspired cuisine in a beautifully designed space with harbour views and a front-row seat to the Downtown Ferry Terminal.
I ordered a few dishes, but the standout for me was definitely the yellowfin tuna, fresh, flavourful and perfectly done. I enjoyed dessert out on the little terrace, soaking up the blissful autumn sunshine, such a treat!
The restaurant also has a great evening vibe, with excellent cocktails and a stylish yet relaxed atmosphere, whether you’re heading there for drinks or a full dinner.
Exploring the Surroundings
City views from Ponsonby
Sunset at Viaduct Harbour
One of the best things about staying at InterContinental Auckland is just how central and walkable everything is. I loved wandering along Queen Street for shopping, but also really enjoyed getting lost in the small alleys and local bookstores around High Street and Fort Lane, a little more low-key and full of character.
Just next door to the hotel is Commercial Bay, a sleek mall with great dining options and some upscale shops, perfect for a bite to eat or a browse. The hotel is also an easy walk to the Viaduct Harbour and if you’re up for a stroll uphill, Albert Park and the Auckland Art Gallery are close by too.
You can reach the Sky Tower in about 10-15 minutes on foot, and the Downtown Ferry Terminal is literally across the street, ideal for day trips to Waiheke Island (which I adore for the wineries and long lunches!). The Britomart train station is only a 2-minute walk, and getting to/from the airport was easy. My Uber from Auckland Airport (AKL) took about 30 minutes (depending on traffic) and cost around NZ$50.
One neighbourhood I additionally loved exploring was Ponsonby. It has a boutique feel, charming houses and views back over the city and Sky Tower. Ponsonby Central is a must-visit and I highly recommend Pastrami & Rye. Also check out Blue on Franklin, just a little further down the road.
Final Words
Wandering around Auckland CBD
Autumn colours in Auckland
If you’re looking for a luxury stay in the heart of Auckland, InterContinental Auckland truly ticks all the boxes. With an unbeatable waterfront location and views to match, it’s hard to find a better-positioned hotel just steps from shopping on Queen Street, dining at Commercial Bay, ferries to Waiheke and everything else the city has to offer.
Whether you’re visiting for business or leisure, the hotel strikes the perfect balance between stylish comfort and convenience. The rooms and suites feel luxurious yet welcoming and Club InterContinental access adds another level of service.
Best of all, nightly rates are reasonable considering the level of service, amenities and the prime location. I wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again next time I’m in Auckland, it’s a five-star experience that delivers both on comfort and value.
Thank you to InterContinental Auckland, who invited me to stay. All opinions are my own.
